A different margin from stocks

Futures are index, energy, metals, and rates contracts for accounts that sign a futures agreement. They are not available on every account type, and they are not turned on by opening a brokerage account.

The online schedule is $1.25 per contract. Intraday and overnight margin will be published on the platform when that book is live. Until then a buying-power figure in the client center is illustrative. Futures also print outside the 09:30–16:00 equity session, so a flat stock chart does not mean the futures book is closed.

Before you treat a quote as a contract

  • Contract size is not one share. Read the multiplier.
  • Expiry is part of the position. A front month and the next month are different instruments.
  • Mark-to-market can ask for cash during the day. That is the point of futures margin.
  • Public quotes such as crude or gold are delayed samples, not a live futures ladder.
  • Do not send funds to support a futures line until clearing is named.
